CBD Brief Introduction

If there is one particularly hot topic in the world of cannabis in recent years, it is Cannabidiol, better known by its acronym CBD.

Today at the heart of a thriving industry and subject to numerous scientific studies, CBD is gaining popularity and recognition after being long overshadowed by the other main cannabis substance: THC.

Therapeutic cannabis

When we talk about cannabis, we first think of drugs, joints, psychoactive and illicit substances. However, for several years, the light has shifted to highlight another aspect of the plant: its virtues for health.

Long denounced and demonized, marijuana is now cultivated for its medicinal properties in many European countries as well as in several American states and in Canada. This is called medical or therapeutic cannabis, as opposed to “recreational” cannabis.

Behind the term medical cannabis hides the cannabinoids, chemical compounds naturally present in the plant that interact with our body to provide various therapeutic and psychoactive effects.

Two of these compounds have become the focus for several decades: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

Here is an infographic to understand what the cannabidiol molecule is and how it interacts with our body through the endocannabinoid system.

CBD research from 1970 to the present day

CBD and THC are the two most abundant cannabinoids in marijuana and have been known since 1940. Although early research showed the psychotropic effects of THC (1964 exactly), it was not until the 1970s and 1980s that first serious advances on the therapeutic uses of CBD. We will remember the date of 1982 as that of the first study demonstrating the antipsychotic effects of CBD.

More and more CBD studies are emerging in the 1990s and are expanding the list of medicinal properties attributed to the molecule. It was not until 1995 that the chemical compound was first applied medically.

The 2000s will be even richer discoveries, including those that highlight the virtues of CBD to treat autoimmune diseases (including multiple sclerosis) and more recently cancers.

Today, the CBD is known to have many health benefits and continues to be studied. The development of medical cannabis has been accompanied by a relaxation of controversial plant legislation in many countries. Several European nations and American states have legalized its use in a medical way, favoring the emergence of a cannabis industry that currently weighs billions of euros.

We are talking about medical cannabis here, because recreational cannabis still remains largely prohibited in Europe and elsewhere.

The equal status of therapeutic cannabis and CBD is constantly evolving (recently in Germany for example) and sometimes remains unclear in some countries. Studies are proliferating and more and more laboratories are looking at the molecule to reveal its properties, but there are still many unknowns. Although cannabis is already applied medically in multiple forms, we are still in the experimental stage for many treatments. We must therefore take some precautions on the subject and wait for the research to advance before we can establish certainties.

What is CBD?

CBD is one of the 144 cannabinoids identified to date, the famous chemical compounds found in cannabis and responsible for the psychoactive and curative effects of the plant. It is the most common cannabinoid in marijuana after THC.

How to extract CBD?

The CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis flower by various methods and mainly intended to be consumed orally as a drop under the tongue. There are several ways to extract CBD from the rest of the plant:

  •  – by liquid solvents (butane, isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, hexane …)
  •  – by CO2 with a closed circuit extraction system
  •  – with vegetable oil (especially olive oil)

Does the CBD have psychoactive effects?

CBD is one of many cannabinoids that do not have psychoactive effects, unlike THC.

What is the difference between CBD and THC?

These two cannabinoids are both close and opposite. They share a number of medicinal properties (analgesic, antispasmodic …) but have some major differences:

  • – THC is psychoactive, CBD is not
  • – CBD has an antipsychotic effect that tends to reduce the psychotropic effect of THC
  • – CBD is an anxiolytic while THC causes anxiety
  • CBD works mainly with receptors in our immune system (CB2) whereas THC works with CB1 located mainly in the brain.

What is CBD oil?

The CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis flower by various methods and is mainly intended to be consumed orally as a drop under the tongue (the famous dyes).

What is the difference between oil and e-liquid CBD?

The oil is rather consumed orally while the e-liquid is used in a vape grass, a bit like an e-cigarette. CBD oil is used in the manufacture of e-liquids and associated with the basic components of the latter: propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine. In general, the oil is much more concentrated in CBD than the e-liquid. The effects of e-liquid are immediate, unlike those of the oil that is ingested.

How to consume CBD?

There are several ways to consume CBD depending on the product made from the molecule:

  • – by vaporization (e-liquids, crystals)
  • – by ingestion (oils, sweets, infusions)
  • by anointing (creams)

Can I use my cannabis spray with CBD e-liquid?

It depends on the type of vaporizer you use. Some models are compatible with e-liquid but often you have to buy a specially designed vaporizer. These vapos (type Kannavape) can put cartridges of e-liquid in it.
