Cannabidiol oil (or CBD or hemp oil) is gaining popularity for its healing effect. Derived from the hemp plant, it has incredible healing power as a supplement and natural remedy.
CBD hemp oil: What is it & what does it do?
CBD oil claims many benefits , and it’s a good idea to take a closer look into it if it sounds like a panacea.
Find out more about all the benefits of CBD oil
The medical use of marijuana is always an eye-catching topic so does cannabis-based health products. First of all, it is important to understand how CBD oil differs. We will look into it a bit more, but the main difference is in the parts of the plant from which the product is made. For example, CBD oil also differs from hempseed oil because it is not derived from the seed but from the flowers, leaves and stems of the hemp.
Surprisingly, research shows that CBD products actually help alleviate many ailments. New research shows that each of these diseases may be related to dysregulation of the endocannabinoid system, ECS for short.
Never heard of it? You’re not alone! It is not as familiar to us as the cardiovascular or immune system, but it is an important part of the human body.
Understand the endocannabinoid system
The endocannabinoid system is probably one of the most intriguing systems in the body. It was discovered by researching the effects of cannabis on the body. In fact, this amazing system that regulates the body’s internal balance has its name from the cannabis plant that made its discovery possible.
The endocannabinoid system consists of endocannabinoids and their receptors. These are found throughout the body, from the brain , other organs to glands and immune cells. The endocannabinoid system works differently in different parts of the body, but the ultimate goal is homeostasis (inner balance).
Ever heard of a “Runner’s High”? The endocannabinoids found in Scientific American are largely responsible for this natural “hit” of euphoria, which enhances well-being and diminishes pain perception.
Cannabidiol (CBD oil) is another powerful substance that effects on the human body system. But will it get you high?
It turns out that there is one more important question: will CBD makes you high?
Will CBD oil make a high?
The short answer is no. (Although oils with THC may also contain CBD).
There are two types of CBD oil products – hemp-based CBD oil (which I refer to in this article) and marijuana-based CBD (which someone would buy at the pharmacy). Both contain CBD, and they are both derived from the cannabis plant, but hemp and medicinal marijuana are different varieties of the plant.
Marijuana-based CBD will generally contain more THC and other cannabinoids. CBD oil does not contain THC (the compound that causes a “high” feeling). That’s an important difference that many people do not understand.
The variety that is typically (and legally) used to make CBD oil is hemp. How is hemp oil different? A plant can only be considered a hemp if it contains .3% per dry unit (or less) of the compound THC.
In short, CBD oil or hemp oil contains the benefits of the cannabis plant without the potential disadvantages of psychoactive substances that are typically caused by inhalation or other methods of consumption.
What are the benefits of CBD oil?
CBD oil is a great remedy for many different diseases. Here are some of the amazing use people (and medical research) report for CBD Oil:
Alleviation of chronic pain
Those who suffer from chronic pain from diseases like fibromyalgia find relief with CBD. Taking CBD can relieve pain and even prevent degeneration of the nervous system. In fact, it is approved in Canada for multiple sclerosis and cancer pain.
What’s really amazing is that CBD does not cause dependency or tolerance, so it’s a great choice for those trying to stay away from opioids.
Other remedies to consider: Not in the CBD? Studies also show that turmeric consumption and heat therapy (e.g., sauna use) can also be helpful. An anti-inflammatory diet also seems to be helpful for some people.
Soothes childhood epilepsy
CBD has anti-seizure properties that have been shown to successfully treat drug-resistant children with neurological disorders such as epilepsy (no side effects!). In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the frequency of seizures dropped by 23 percentage points more than placebo.
While I much prefer a natural remedy as a first step, but also the Food and Drug Administration seems to agree that cannabis drugs can have something to offer. In April 2018, the FDA’s advisors released the very first cannabis drug for approval, one intended to help control seizures.
Other Remedies to Consider: Childhood epilepsy is a serious condition and it is important to work with a qualified physician specializing in this area. Recent research also shows that a ketogenic diet can be very helpful in drug-resistant epilepsy, especially in children.
Reduces anxiety and depression
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, depression affects 6% and anxiety affects 18% of the US population every year. Research has shown that CBD oil can help with both.
CBD has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety in people with conditions such as PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and compulsive OCD. CBD has even reduced the stress and discomfort in the public.
Although a B12 deficiency may also be to blame, CBD has been shown to reduce depression by increasing cortical signaling serotonergic and glutamate (both lacking in those with depression).
Other remedies to consider: Kelly Brogan offers a lot of helpful information for anxiety and depression in this podcast episode. Vitamin B12 is also linked to mental health and it can be helpful to work with someone who has experience in optimizing B12 levels.
Fights multidrug-resistant bacteria
Researchers discovered that cannabinoids (including CBD) have an unusual ability to destroy bacteria (especially drug-resistant strains). More research is needed to find out how and why it works.
A 2011 study found that CBD can also slow the progression of tuberculosis in rats. Researchers concluded that CBD is likely to do so by inhibiting T-cell proliferation rather than possessing antibacterial properties.
Whatever the mechanism for killing bacteria, CBD seems to be a powerful weapon against the antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” that are becoming more of a problem today.
Other remedies to consider: Do not you want to try cannabidiol? There is also research on the use of garlic, honey and oregano oil for drug-resistant strains, but working with a practitioner with experience in infectious diseases.
Chronic inflammation is a huge problem in our society that contributes to many non-communicable diseases including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune disease and more, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
Diet and lifestyle play a major role in chronic inflammation, but if people already eat a healthy, nutritious diet and optimize their lifestyle (for example, enough sleep and exercise), CBD oil can help. Research also shows that CBD oil can reduce chronic inflammation that leads to disease.
Other remedies to consider: Research agrees that it is important to address gut health in order to combat inflammation. The removal of refined sugar from food has also been shown to reduce inflammation in just one week.
Reduces oxidative stress
Oxidative stress is responsible for many ailments today. Oxidative stress is when the body has too many free radicals and can not neutralize them (with antioxidants). This is a bigger problem today than in the past because our environment is so much more toxic than it used to be. A 2010 study shows that CBD oil acts as an antioxidant and another study found that CBD has neuro-protective properties. Thus, CBD can reduce neurological damage caused by free radicals.
Help with schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a complicated and serious condition that is usually treated by therapy and medications (which have strong side effects). Anecdotally, many people have found that CBD oil has helped reduce hallucinations. Research is also beginning to catch up. A review of the available research in March 2015 showed that CBD is a safe, effective and well-tolerated treatment for psychosis. However, to bring the CBD into clinical practice requires further research.
It should be noted that THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana, can increase psychosis in high-risk groups. CBD oil, on the other hand, only helps to reduce psychosis and can even counter psychosis caused by marijuana use.
Promotes healthy weight
Cannabidiol can help maintain healthy blood sugar, stimulate genes and protein that help reduce fat, and increase mitochondria that help burn calories.
CBD also encourages the body to convert white fat to brown fat. White fat is the type of fat we normally think of when we think of body fat. Brown fat is fat that in small deposits and functions differently than white fat. Brown fat is said to improve one’s health by improving the body’s ability to burn white fat, generate heat, and even regulate blood sugar.
Improves heart health
Heart disease is a growing problem today. In fact, it is the leading cause of death in the US. Having a healthy diet and lifestyle is a top priority for heart health, but CBD oil can help as well. According to research, cannabidiol reduces arterial obstruction, reduces stress-related cardiovascular reaction and can lower blood pressure. It can also lower cholesterol.
As mentioned earlier, CBD oil is helpful in the prevention of oxidative stress and inflammation. Both are often precursors of heart disease.
Improves the skin conditions
CBD oil can be used topically for the treatment of skin diseases. Studies show that CBD oil has a high potential for treating skin conditions such as eczema by promoting abnormal cell death. It can also help regulate skin oil production and reduce acne. CBD also contains many nutrients such as Vitamin E, which help to improve and protect the skin.
Other remedies to consider: Diet is crucial for skin health. Many people find that removing foods such as sugar, dairy or cereals (if sensitive) improves the skin. I also personally use a probiotic skin spray that has made a huge difference to my acne prone skin.
The role of CBD oil in cancer treatment needs further research, but what is available looks promising. According to the American Cancer Society, CBD oil can slow down the growth and spread of some cancers (in animals). Because it combats oxidative stress and inflammation (and both are linked to cancer), it makes sense that CBD oil could help combat cancer cells.
CBD vs. Hemp oil
This is a common question and a misunderstanding. As mentioned above, although they are from the same plant, they are different strains and CBD is harvested from plants that do not contain THC (or negligible amounts). CBD is completely legal and is not considered a drug. Due to the often confused history of these plants, many manufacturers use “hemp oil” instead of the controversial “CBD oil” in their marketing. The CBD values can vary widely depending on the production, so it is important to find a high-quality manufacturer with verified values.
Use of CBD oil
CBD oil is most commonly used internally (by ingestion). Since CBD oil is a relatively new supplement, the accurate dosage is not well established. While more studies are needed, there is no established CBD “overdose” and there are very few, if any, side effects with each dosage.
When trying to find the right dosage, consider these things:
- – Start by buying quality oil from a reputed company. A higher quality oil is more bioavailable, so a lower dose may be sufficient.
- – Start with the recommended dosage on the bottle (especially with preventive use).
- – Some notice a change immediately, while others do not notice improvement over several weeks. If there is still no change after a few weeks, increase the dosage.
- – As with most herbal supplements, low dosage 3-4 times a day is more therapeutic than a large dose.
Important Note: Although CBD oil alone is very safe, it can interact with drugs, especially opioids. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about interactions or are unsure about the use of hemp oil for your conditions.
CBD Oil for Pet
All mammals have an endocannabinoid system, CBD oil can have some of the same benefits for pets as humans.
Especially in cats and dogs, CBD oil can help:
- excessive barking or crying
- Pets that can cope with other pets
- relaxing pets before the vet visit
- separation anxiety
Use of CBD oil for pets
There may be some trial and error in finding the right dosage for pets. Start with a low dose of 1 milligram per 10 pounds of body weight and if necessary go up to 5 milligrams per 10 pounds of body weight. Some complaints may require a higher dose. A low dose 3-4 times a day is usually more therapeutic than a large dose.
CBD: What I tried (& what I want)
There are many benefits to use CBD oil as a supplement. A healthy diet and lifestyle should always be the first step to improving health, but CBD oil can help build on that foundation.
I tried CBD oil supplements before and noticed a calming effect almost immediately. Since I have the MAO-A gene and am very Type A, I have always struggled with the sleep and shutdown of my brain. I found CBD oil very helpful for that. I also used it to reduce inflammation after injury with good results.
I do not use CBD oil all the time, but keep it for injuries or nights when it is difficult to sleep. It is important to use pure CBD oil from a reputed company.
One way I regularly get the benefits of CBD is to add a teaspoon of this hemp-enriched honey to my tea at night. It helps me to relax and fall asleep (and it’s not just my imagination … it has a whopping 20 milligrams of hemp oil and its relaxing effect in a teaspoon). These hemp honey sticks from the same company are also great for traveling and traveling.
What do you think about CBD oil? Would you try or think that it is still too controversial? I would like to hear your thoughts!
